ANZAC DAY - 25th APRIL

As dawn breaks across the waters of the bay,
We hear haunting sounds as a piper starts to play.
Australians gather to remember the day
The ANZACS landed at Gallipoli.

Silhouettes of old diggers appear ghostly on the sand,
Proudly, though frail, they march to the Strand,
Where the Eternal Flame burns for the heroic band
Of men who fought at Gallipoli.

April 25th, 1915 saw them beach
On a foreign shore, at dawn, and into the breach
They gallantly advanced, victory out of their reach
On the sand 'neath the cliffs of Gallipoli.

Each ANZAC Day Australian flags rise,
Tearfully, yet proudly, we remember the cries
Of soldiers who battled for their homeland. The prize?
Peace and pride for Gallipoli.

We honour these men and all those who fought
Upon foreign shores: they did not die for nought.
Freedom for their country was what they sought
When they laid down their lives at Gallipoli.

I would like to add to this poem "THE ODE to the Fallen" which is recited whenever Australians gather to remember.

They shall not grow old as we who are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun, and in the morning,
We will remember them.
"LEST WE FORGET".
