There is so much anticipation about a newborn, parents may overlook ways to include their children in a joyous occasion. Kids can be educated about their future and role to help raise the newcomer. Some tips and helpful resources are available for expectant parents expanding their family dynamic to ease into this transition and help all of those involved.

Some hospitals now offer big brother/sister classes. Parents and their children can come in and learn about the upcoming big event. In the group environment, children can have questions answered and get some hands-on experience to prepare for what lies ahead. They can see other kids and their parents are going through the same process, so they won't feel alone. They can also proudly make something to give to baby like stenciling a bib.

Our son was extremely proud to welcome his little sister. He came to office visits to listen to the baby's heart. Getting to spend time talking to baby through Mommy's belly was a great way for all us to connect. Curious kids will also have doctors at their disposal to alleviate any concerns about the new arrival.

Our family could talk and scheme about the times ahead. You could say it was like waiting for a miraculous gift to be unwrapped. Shopping for baby was fun, especially if you visit your child's favorite stores. He or she can help pick out clothes and gifts. Wrapping presents together is also fun, as is redecorating. It can be a difficult time if your child's play area or sleeping arrangements have to change. It's important to discuss this and get input on new ways to reorganize. And what kid doesn't like to paint?

It will be hectic when the day arrives, and your child could feel left out. Hopefully, there are grandparents, aunts and uncles or other relatives that can lend support and assurances. Making plans to have your child involved on the big day will require some extra hands, as Mom and Dad will be a bit distracted. Take every opportunity to spend time with them during this process. Those first sightings in the ward could become impactful moments.

And those first moments, posing for pictures with the new baby are precious. You can record and share those moments again and again while watching the two of them grow together. This is a great opportunity, helping your child realize their role in the family. An older sibling can reap great rewards for this new found responsibility that helps build character and confidence.
