Newfoundland II
I am a Newfoundlander.
Newfoundland was her own country when we decided to join with Canada; we were our own nation. Newfoundland had it's own legal system; with postal service, as well as Newfoundland currency. We have our own time zone. Newfoundland has species of creatures, wild, and domestic, named after, and original to Newfoundland. We were as much a country as Canada is a country in the present.
I am sure it is apparent I am a Newfoundlander. The reality of my conviction is one of great sadness. You see I am a card carrying member of the Canadian Dominion; Canada my Country. But here it is! Here is the so desperately sad reality that I, and all of my fellow Newfoundlanders have been facing since the Terms of Union. We are part of a dominion that keeps kicking us in the teeth. And once the thorough beating appears to be over, we are beaten again with deceptive, and undermined, malicious behavior. When some bandages, and medical attention to our wounds seems on the way, we are told that we have to be good obedient Newfoundlanders; stay in line. Being as sure as sure gets, that we know our place in Canada, and be happy with what has been given the hungry Newfoundlander.
As I grew my father made it clear we where Canadians first, and Newfoundlanders second. That has been my position year after year - beating after beating. That I was a Canadian first, and a Newfoundlander second! I cry out that we are proud, strong, and intelligent people, with immeasurable wealth, unique to this earth. My membership in the Dominion of Canada is now desperately lacking. I pray resolution, and supportive acceptance, fosters a national unity from the Atlantic to the Pacific, and Arctic, and those who govern nationally encompass, and embrace Newfoundland and Labrador whole heatedly into the Canadian fold. Yet here is federal leader who's behavior is indicative in what I speak of to you.
The big lie: Prime Minister Harper has refused to honour the Atlantic Accord, which he promised before the election. He is now trying to convince Newfoundland & Labrador that he has kept his promise. The fact is according to Memorial University's Professor of economics, that this province will lose over 10 billion dollars by year 2020 under the new equalization proposal. This is Prime Minister Harper’s BIG LIE, his subjective truth - shameful!
