The Study They gather around their subject, Scrutinizing him warily From a distance Above. How unusual, they comment aloud in their native tongue, This creature is completely outside of his natural environment, Yet he seems oddly at peace. The group of observers closes in the circle, Wanting to glean more information, The extraordinary sights and sounds And smells of this individual. Is he lost? some of them wonder. Why else would he come here, Where he doesn’t belong And is at the mercy of our judgment? They continue to circle And to observe and to wonder. No, they finally decide, He’s not lost, He just wants to be more like us. And as the lone swimmer approaches the shore, The seagulls fly away, one by one, Bringing an end to the circle And the study.
