It Was The Cat

The cruisers lights flash as the dark damp streets race by. The flickering streetlamps are winking and mocking me. “I didn’t do it! Please believe me!” I scream to deaf ears.

I didn’t do it.

It was the cat.

I heard something odd on the baby monitor. A kind of low, growling, sucking sound. I raced to Lily’s room. As I approached her crib, a large grey cat looked up from his feast. Its paws were on Lily’s chest, and an opalescent string trailed from her mouth to his. Her tiny body convulsed as the cat turned back to his meal, savoring the life he was draining from my baby.

They think I did it.

But it was the cat.
