THOSE WHO MUST WAIT.
The families of Soldiers are heroes too.

THOSE WHO MUST WAIT.

We honour our Veterans in verses and rhymes,
But some, rarely honoured, forgotten sometimes,
Are the wives and the husbands, the daughters and sons,
The mums and the dads, uncles, aunts; they're the ones,
Who watched their brave soldiers leave them to protect
Their homeland. It's they who deserve our respect.

To carry on living and try to keep calm
While tending to children, the office, the farm,
Wherever they are, their thoughts never stray
From loved ones whose duty has called them away.
Sending a care package, a card or a letter,
Anything to make their Soldier feel better.

Those waiting at home need love and support,
To help them survive these times that are fraught
With anguish and worry, while holding heads high
And showing the world their spirit won't die.
Secretly afraid, they pray every day
For news that their loved one is really okay.

Be it just for a month or even a year,
They live every day with the knowledge and fear
Of that knock at the door or the ring of the phone,
To tell them that someone will never come home.
This waiting is torment, a tough time to live,
They need all the praise and applause we can give.

Families play their charade to show soldiers who roam
There's no need for concern about them here at home.
Such serious business to tend to at war,
They don't need our problems to worry them more.
And when they come back, minds tormented and troubled,
Care duties, more often than not, have been doubled.

How do I know that this is what's done?
Of those who must wait, I was proud to be one.
