A Knife in the Dark …

She’s only fifteen
…..and very afraid.
She’s here because of
…..bad choices she’d made.

He said he loved her
…..but that was a lie.
She’s ended up here,
…..afraid she could die.

Moments of passion,
…..his house after school.
Now three months later,
…..his comments are cruel.

“Your problem, not mine,”
…..he said with a sneer.
As he walked away
…..her heart lurched in fear.

She turned to her friends
…..to ask for advice.
They’d heard of a man
…..who’d help, for a price.

So, that’s where she went
…..alone in the night.
A boarded up house
…..away from the light.

Old kitchen table
…..laid out with a sheet.
A man with a beard,
…..he says, “Take a seat.”

A tray full of knives
…..and handles with hooks.
She’s not sure she likes
…..the way it all looks.

But she has no choice;
…..she does as she’s told.
Soon she feels sleepy;
…..her body feels cold.

Much later, she wakes;
…..her body is bare.
She calls out in pain,
…..but no one is there.

The lights are turned off,
…..except down the hall.
She rises slowly
…..and tries not to fall.

The sheets underneath
…..were covered in red.
The evidence of
…..her blood that’s been shed.

A last look around
…..then she can embark.
One thing left behind …..
…..a knife in the dark.
