GATES OF REASON

When all that matters is but skin,
When beauty lies in being but thin;

When life is ruled by sight and smell,
When being plain is simply like hell;

When manners are but painted smile,
When fashion rules us all the while;

When real substance is shadowed,
When gates of reason are narrowed;

It’s then that man’s progress declines.
Each man his route himself defines.
