"I heard the cat again last night."
"Amy, we've been all over this! There is no cat!"
"I know what I heard."
"How could there be a cat? How would one get in? There is no cat!"
"Last night I heard it crying in the attic."
"Stop it Amy!"
"I know what I heard."
"Do you want me to search the attic again?"
"No."
"Then tell me what you do want. There could not be a cat in the attic. How would it get in? What would it live on? If there had been a cat it would have starved by now."
"Mice?"
"There was no sign of mice either."
"I heard it! It cried and cried."
"But it stopped when I got home?"
"I guess so."
"Amy don't you see? There's some sound that sounds to you like a cryinvg cat. It's an old house and it has its own noises, You've been on edge lately and you notice it more when I'm not here. "
"I heard it last night."
"It was windy and raining last night."
"And it's still windy and raining, I know but what I heard was not the wind. It was a cat."
"A ghost cat? One that only you can hear?"
"Don't ~~ "
"I just want you to listen to yourself!"
"you think I'm still crazy."
"You were never crazy."
"Well look at this, It's one of the old books you found in the garage." She opened the yellowed pages and found a photograph. A stern faced man sitting in a chair with a cat on his knee and a small boy standing beside him.
"Who's that?"
"I don't know. "
"Those are two of the ugliest people I ever saw! The old man looks as if he could ~~ I don't know what."
"I wonder if he ever lived in this house? That boy looks terrified."
"They're altogether ooky."
"This isn't funny."
"It's just a picture. Whoever they were they're dead and gone."
"Well, I have a bad feeling about it and that cat ~~ "
"A cat in that picture would be a hundred by now. "
"Phil, can we stay somewhere else tonight?"
"This is our home now."
"Yes, I know and I loved this house when I first saw it but now ~~ There's a Holiday Inn up on the highway. Please?
Phil could not say no to her. She was finally asleep in the motel bed. Phil lay back with a sigh and then bolted upright. A cat was yowling and clawing at the door.
