Lucy smiled at the small wooden box sitting on her kitchen table. It was strange with small holes all around the sides. Joe must have bought her something for their anniversary, after all. She thought he’d forgotten, since all he ever talked about any more was the new reptile house he was building at the zoo. She slowly opened the lid with gleeful anticipation that quickly turned to horror as a small brown snake shot out like a spring and clamped onto her wrist. Joe walked into the room just as she fell, dead, to the floor. He placed the snake back into its box with a stick and hummed as he dialed 911. Word Count: 114
