In a Child's Mind
The plight of abused children

I was so happy with my daddy
but he died when I was three,
when my naughty mother left me
to marriy another guy,
one who never liked me?

Now I’m so scared
when he comes up to me
as I hide under the bed
the cupboards are bare
so I close my eyes.

I tried calling the fairies
but they don’t hear me
now what must I do?
say my prayers
pretend I’m sleeping.

Two years later now
he that abused me
is no longer free,
he is in jail
my mother has fled,

I am left to be an orphan,
a little girl in my dreams
with visions to see -
I told my teacher, now I am free
to live not afraid to be me.
