Lights in the Water
Night. On the river. mooring lines connect land to water. Inside I float, gently rocking, cocooned. Slap of waves on hull; sshh of water on shore; clink of wire on mast; soft sigh of wind in rigging. Above, stars eternal; below, stars ephemeral. Movement on water – tiny sparks of light and life twinkle, then disappear. Along the shore, as waves softly ripple, sparks coalesce into ribbons of light. Phosphorescence dances! Linda Visman, 22nd November 2005 Written after an overnight sleep in the boat on the Hawkesbury River, north of Sydney, NSW, Australia. We got up in the night and saw the glow on the shore. When we put our hand in the water the movement stirred up sparks of phosphorescence. It was lovely to watch.
