WWWAAAAAHHHHHHAAWWAAAAHHHH…
It can’t be. There’s no way.
Vicky’s still sleeping. There’s no way anyone could sleep through this.
WWWAAAAAHHHHHHAAWWAAAAHHHH…
“Vicky, Vicky wake up. Wake up!”
“Tom…wha..what is it?”
There’s no way. She has to hear it.
“How can you sleep over that?”
“Over wha…Tom, it’s four in the morning…what’s goin…”
“Shhh… babe… It was just a bad dream. Go back to sleep.”
“But..wha..I thought you…”
And she‘s back to sleep. This can’t be real.
WWWAAAAAHHHHHHAAWWAAAAHHHH…
It’s all those damn warnings and drills they’ve been running in the plant. Yeah, that’s it.
They’ve wrapped my head in Fallout drills, and…and Doomsday scenarios and now it’s in my head.
It’s just in my mind. All in my head.
WWWAAAAAHHHHHH…PSSHHT ATTENTION ALL POWER PLANT EMPLOYEES. THIS IS NOT A DRILL. ACTIVATE EMERGENCY PROCEDURE ORANGE. PLEASE PROCEED TO THE NEAREST FALLOUT SHELTER IMMEDIATELY. FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH PROCEDURE WILL BE CONSIDERED BREACH OF CONTRACT AND WILL RESULT IN IMMEDIATE…
Death. Forget about the damned contract. Not going to the shelter would be suicide.
…TERMINATION. APPROXIMATELY 35 MINUTES UNTILL NUCLEAR FALLOUT. PLEASE PROCEED TO NEAREST SHELTER…PSSHHT…WWWAAAAAHHHHHHAAWWAAAAHHHH…
There it is. No hiding it now. All out in the open.
Not just fallout, NUCLEAR fallout.
“VICKY!”
“What now Tom…”
“Listen, Vicky, Listen.”
WWWAAAAAHHHHHHAAWWAAAAHHHH…
“Can’t you hear that? Can’t you?”
“I don’t hear anything, Tom.”
“B-b-but, but…”
“Go back to sleep Tom.”
I must be crazy.
—————————————————————————————————————

I just walked down the hall to check on the girls. Sound asleep.
So is Vicky.
Looking out my window, I can see the explosion.
It hasn’t reached our house yet.
But I can see it getting closer.
It’s to late to go to the shelter.
I don’t see any reason to wake them up.
