Across a burning stretch of sand ~

Across a burning stretch of sand
where ancients danced with sacred drum -
a maiden rises from the smoke
returned to walk this native home.

Left to wander near and far
in search of truth no longer kept -
         a crystal stream – an eagle’s flight
would haunt the trail where sorrow wept.

Into the sun – some distant place
would keep them close together still -
between the mountains left to wait
another time to know their will.

         Beneath the canopy of light
where once their echo lingered long -
would spill their blood on riverbeds
and fill the canyon walls with song.

A steady drum – immortal beat
where stars are pressed against the night -
         recalls a noble yesterday
         when honor danced by firelight.

         One maiden there forever walks
on sands across a milky sky.
         Silver bracelets - a cadence plays -
         surrendered with their mortal cry.

What noble truth yet calls the wind
by name the mountain held before -
became as one with oak and sea
were brothers born the elk and boar.

This land recalls one blemished tear
and weeps for loss - their right to claim
was held between the earth and sky
and grown in fields that loved her name.
