This was written as a farewell tribute for a young handicapped/disabled child who passed away last week. His family has Native American ancestry and they have taken comfort in knowing that the Great Spirit has welcomed the child back home.

For Logan ...

The Great Spirit took a great breath and blew life into a young soul.

This young soul wanted to travel and learn.
This young soul would share the teachings of the Great Spirit.
This young soul would visit the world of man.

He would teach them to stand tall like the deer and show pride in their heritage.
He would teach them to run like the wolf, so that their bodies would be strong.
He would teach them to listen like the hare, to hear messages from the wind.
He would teach them all this and so much more.
This soul would be born as a child of man, but would have the wisdom of the ancestors.

However … this young soul had difficulties adapting to the world of man.
The shape of a man-child was too small.
The soul was constricted, confined and cramped.
The soul could not pack all the wisdom into such a small space.
The soul pushed outward as the man-child grew within, but the world of man clashed with the world of spirit. Changes occurred within and without.

Thus, the soul and the man-child merged, but neither was quite as had been planned.

The merged child was born … a combination of spirit and man … and was named Logan.

Logan could hear the wind’s whispers, but could not speak the messages.
Logan could see the ancestors dancing, but could not join in the dance.
Logan was a part of this world, but could not share the teachings of the Great Spirit.

Then the Great Spirit called …
“Young soul, you wanted to experience life. You wanted to learn. You wanted to share.

But this was not your time.

For Logan Tall Deer, who was not able to stand tall …
For Logan Running Wolf, who was not able to run …
For Logan Swift Eagle, who was not able to fly …

The Great Spirit will welcome you.
The ancestors will guide you.
It is time to come home.”
