The official Newspaper of the A-1 Writing Academy Page Editor: Budroe is Blessed! "From Where I Sit..." September 1, 2007 Friends, Students, Faculty, and Staff: This is an amazing time of new beginnings. I am grateful for this opportunity to share with you some of the thinking that has gone into the decision to alter the way the A-1 Writing Academy operates.I will tell you why I believe it is in the best interest of all concerned to make these changes. The Academy is fast approaching the 1,000-member mark. In WDC life, that is very significant. Because of the membership "type" we have here, we have a limit of 1,000 group members. The Academy must support itself on-site at all times. It is only because of the generous and selfless donations of friends that we were able to upgrade to this particular level of membership. At our current spending rate, we cannot hope to achieve the more than 25,000,000 GPs required to upgrade our membership. I don't think we have to--yet! Our growth since April, 2007 has been phenomenal. We now must create strategies to make our 1,000-member limit most effective for those students who wish to learn all they can. We have been a "casual," or "drop-in" service for over a year now. Because our members have come to know the value the Academy offers them, our growth in the number of applications and course registrations has more than doubled, twice, this year alone. We are transitioning the Academy into a Quarterly Term system of operation, where a total of 1,000 "seats" are available in each of the four quarters (Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer) of our Academy year. We now have scholarship student who are enrolled either because of scholarship gifts, individual need, or educational excellence. We will have done away with the popular Student Assignment Awards GPs program by the time you read this newspaper. We found ourselves giving out many times the amount the Academy took in to deserving students who completed homework assignments in a timely manner. The Academy cannot sustain its own operations with such a significant and perpetual loss of income, GP-wise. In the process, we were able to show our dedication to student success in a visible way. Now, we must show it in other significant ways. By having enough seats available in our classrooms, you can have the opportunity to learn in a "real" learning environment. New courses, new faculty, and new staff provide a compelling opportunity to expand the services the Academy can offer you. Now, four times each year, 1,000 members can learn. That's 4,000 WDC members who will walk our halls, take our courses, and return to the WDC community better prepared to contribute significant writing to our community. The tuition remains the same, but is spread across each quarter at 250 GPs. The one cost added to this new Academy is a 500 GP one-time charge per course enrolled. That does not include the "Student Orientation" that all first-time enrollees must complete during their first Academy term. We are also working on the development of complete Programs of Study within the Academy. We hope, in the near future, to offer Diplomate Certifications for both Poetry and Prose, as well as other areas of learning. To make these and other exciting opportunities available to you, we have had to re-position our faculty and staff, re-orient our way of thinking, and resolve important educational issues. Your success is our first concern. We believe this new quarterly system will not only insure our survival, but also your learning success. There is much to learn, and you can get it all right here in "The Academy News." We look forward with great excitement to the new Academy year beginning October 1, 2007. I hope you will join us as we set off on yet another grand adventure in learning. These pages are filled with important, and useful information for our students, staff, and faculty. Read them and keep them close by. The Academy Calendar for the Fall 2007 Term is here. The entire Curriculum Catalog is here. Links for both tuition payment, Academy admission, and Course Registration are here. The plan is completely within these pages. That is why we are sending this Newspaper to every single student, faculty, and staff member of the A-1 Writing Academy. This is the Premiere Issue of what we fully believe will become THE most important document of your entire Academy learning experience. I thank you for your patience as we transition to, create, and define these new educational frontiers. Please know that every decision was made with the success of our students in mind. We are confident that you will see, very quickly, impressive and important changes to your Academy experience. We believe you will love them! I look forward to seeing each of you in the new Academy year!
