The official Newsletter of the A-1 Writing Academy

"A-1 Staff/Students Sweep July Short Shots Contest!"

On August 16, 2007, Diane announced to the entire WDC community the winners of the July "Short Shots" Contest. The regular contest encourages writers to create a story or poem based upon a photographic image prompt.

The Friends of the Academy (FOTA) is proud to announce that students of the A-1 Academy and FOTA staff swept the contest!!

Our Webpage manager for "The Academy News", iKïyå§ama was awarded FIRST PRIZE, from the 66 entries to that monthly contest! Her winning story, The Orchid Bride  is a wonderfully written, and thought-provoking drama which displayed not only masterful writing, but depth of character and plot. Congratulations, Kiya! Enjoy your well-deserved $100 Amazon.com gift certificate, and all the accolades such a superbly-crafted story deserves.

A-1 Academy student Mishael Austin Witty was awarded SECOND PRIZE for his winning story, Invalid Item . This heart-wrenching story shows the clear and precise syle of an excellent writer who takes us from the innocence of children to the depth of loss of a grieving wife and mother. It is a highly recommended read. Celebrate with us as this deserving student and author has received not only the 500,000GP prize, but the acclaim of the entire WDC community for this superb wordcraft.

A-1 Academy student Poetry Emotion completed the A-1 sweep, with his THIRD PRIZE entry of Adrift , a short, but compelling story of lost time, lost relationship, and lost dreams. This is an excellent example of writing in the short form. Congratulations, Dave! You have not only garnered 250,000 GPs for your fine effort, but the regard and honor from our entire WDC community.

The judges for this past month's contest were:

hoovies (WDC Friend)
TRose-Going Insane (A-1 Student)
Sarah {A-1 Faculty)

The contest was coordinated by WDC Senior Staffer Diane .

Thank you to all our winning students and staff who, every day, make it only more certain that the Academy DOES have an effect on the quality of our authors. This contest is held monthly, and all Academy members, students, staff and faculty are urged to participate. The Academy is consistently represented among the winners of this prestigious contest.

Our very own Char walked away with the SECOND PRIZE for the month of June, 2007 with her entry of Invalid Item , a simple yet thought-provoking poem about the importance of remembering the value of today in each life.

The contest alternates between the "Short Shots" Contest and the "Quotation Inspiration" Contest. All subscribers of "The Academy News" are strongly encouraged to participate in this impressive WDC contest.

Congratulations to all the entrants. *Bigsmile*

Dateline: August 18th, 2007

"Winners Announced! A-1 is 2 for 3!"

As many A-1 students are aware, the Academy just completed its "Urgent Message" Contest, moderated by our own larryp. The contest was, in part, a launch of all the activities you are reading about in this newspaper--and for the newspaper itself, actually.

The idea was to celebrate the occasion of our 500th enrolled student--which we did! But we also wanted this WDC contest to mark a new beginning: our march to 1,000 students before the end of this calendar year! That continuing party will be highlighted in the future editions of this newspaper, and all readers are urged to stay tuned for the exciting festivities planned around THIS significant moment. Personally, I believe it will happen before we close enrollment for this Fall term on October 13, 2007. I feel very strongly that our 1,000th enrolled student will register by the end of this Academy year, however.

We kicked off the festivities, and our 1,000th Student Watch, with our "Urgent Message" Contest. This contest, designed by our own CEO, deborahowen was a series of prompts--urgent messages--from which entrants were required to create either poetry or prose selections for judging by "the Mystery Judges."

The contest officially ended on July 31, 2007. And the results are now, officially posted--right here, in "The Academy News". Our winners for this special contest

Temagami (Guiding Light) First Prize!

Shelley!! Congratulations! Our Managing Editor of this very newspaper for our Premiere Edition, and Assistant to the (non-judging) Administrator, takes the top prize of 50,000 GPs, for her First Place story, Invalid Item . This thought-provoking story, which followed prompt #1 in the contest, pits a passenger's fate and common sense against time and the telephone company. Excellent writing, Temagami (Guiding Light) ! The Academy is proud of you!

T.L.Finch Second Prize!

This author, one of our WDC friends, wrote a commanding poem in response to prompt # 7 of the contest, garnering a Second Prize of 25,000 GP for a riveting poem, Susan . In this urgent message, the fear of a loving mother comes full circle. Congratulations, T.L.Finch on a good piece of poetry. You have done yourself, the Contest, and WDC proud indeed.

Mishael Austin Witty Third Prize!

Sound familiar? It should! This A-1 Writing Academy student is also listed for the second-place win secured in the contest highlighted above in the WDC "Short Shots" Contest for July 2007! Taking a well-deserved, but closely contested, THIRD PRIZE with a compelling story, Invalid Item  this response to prompt #7 in the Urgent Message Contest is not only well worth a read, but also fully worthy of the 10,000 GP prize which accompanies the win! Congratulations on doubling up!

We are grateful to our Judges for this A-1 Writing Academy Contest:

Larry served as the moderator for the contest, and also sat in as a worthy judge of the Poetry entrants. Larry has served on the Academy faculty as a beloved teacher of both Prose and Poetry. His dedication to the Academy, our students and programs is legendary. Thank you, larryp once again for your service.

This Fall term begins an entirely new, yet continuing relationship between our Academy and the Rising Stars Group. Not only has Tornado Day served us well as a judge in the "Urgent Message" contest, but she also serves the Academy as one of several coordinators of the Rising Star Scholarship Program, which is an exclusive Rising Star/A-1 Writing Academy cooperative program. Worthy Rising Stars can apply, or even compete for tuition and course fee scholarships to the Academy, thanks to this program created by Rising Star Leader Gabriella and our own Budroe is Blessed! . The Academy is proud to be a sponsor of this very special Scholarship Program, and we thank the Rising Star family of friends for their invaluable assistance and leadership in creating this very special award.

The place where we have some coffee and talk. Y'know...
by Kittiara

It may, or may not surprise any who know this amazing leader in our WDC community, but the interaction shared between Kittiara and several of our Academy staff and faculty have resulted in this wonderful person being recently added to our Faculty for the Fall, 2007 term! We are so very lucky, and completely grateful, to have this shining star with us. Kitt will be developing a series of courses in Reviewing and Critiquing. She will be sharing that responsibility, and the courses which will come from them, with several other faculty members during future terms. We completely welcome this senior WDC member, and newest member of our faculty team. She not only served in the "Urgent Message" Contest, she answered an urgent plea to help us develop courses you indicated a desire to have. Thank you, Kitt, and welcome to the Academy family! *Bigsmile*

Our thanks to all entrants, and our fantastic judges for their marvelous work in this contest. We look forward to even greater contests as the exciting march to our 1,000th student continues!

Stay tuned to this page, to find out when the next A-1 Contest will be announced. We will also have full coverage of our 2007 NaNo activities right here, as well. Groups are forming now, and our students will be major contributors again this year. Get ready for the A-1 NaNo 2008 Blow Out! You can get all the information on this exciting contest--but you can only get it right here, in "The Academy News".
