Intro: Studying at Edwards.
Camera closes in on two students talking to themselves in a very nice home. The first student we see is a young man. His name is Edward and he is perhaps three, maybe four years older than the girl besides him. He's not handsome, nor is he ugly. He is more than plain. He's a senior at Cordial High School. The other student we see is a young girl of sixteen. She is not pretty, yet nor is she extremely ugly. She is plain. She is a sort of friend of his. She's actually his tutor. She's a senior as well, having skipped a couple grades. After studying they talk.
Edward:
So, Ann. I passed Ms. North's math test today. And it's all thanks to you.
He smiles as she blushes slightly.
Ann:
No. Edward. It was you and all your hard work.
Edward:
Yaw, but you helped me with my studies. So...to celebrate, how's 'bout we goes to 'Candies' tonight?
Ann:
Um. I don't think so-
Edward:
Aww! Why's the heck not?
We see Ann start to get up in haste and gather her books. He grabs her hand to stop her. She drops her books and looks scared. After a moment she pulls away. She ignores the fallen book as she cradles her hand to her. After more moments of intense stares, Ann duck's down to pick up her books. Edward does as well.
Edward:
Sorry. Didn't mean to-
Ann:
No. It's alright.
She avoid his face as she talks.
Edward:
So...
Ann:
So what?
Edward:
So, what about going out tonight?
Ann:
Edward...I don't -
Edward:
Please?
After some hesitation Ann makes up her mind.
Ann:
Well...Okay. Yes. I would love-like to go out with you tonight.
Edward:
Great. I'll pick you up at six.
Ann:
Yes. Perfect.
Ann finishes gathering her stuff and Edward and her walk to the front door and they say good bye.
Edward:
Until's tonight.
She whispers to herself dreamily...
Ann:
Until tonight.
Exit.
Enter: Commotion at Candies.
Camera comes in and we see a nice little diner titled 'Candies'. Then we see a nice-expensive car pull up in the parking lot. A young man steps out of the car and helps a young girl out of the passenger seat. He escorts her up the walk and into the diner. They take a seat in the back and talk to themselves. A waitress comes to them and takes their orders then leaves. The couple talk.
Edward:
Where are you at after's school when your not helpin' me?
Ann:
I usually go home or if I can to the library. I really like to read.
Edward:
I like to read too.
Ann:
Really?
Edward:
Yeah, among other things. Like-
The couple are interrupted by a commotion thirty feet away from them. It's three people whose busted thru the doors of the diner. One woman and two men before her. They storm thru the crowds and approach the Edward and Ann. One man speaks to Edward, his names Richard Mason. Referred to just as Mason. He's an old friend of Edward but no recently.
Mason.
What do you think your doing?
Edward:
Richard Mason. Let me be.
The other man-named Patric Barns speaks.
Patric:
Oh no we wont. You have some nerve. what about Bertha...your girlfriend?
There's a deep silence. Everyone is quiet. Observers from around the room watch the drama unfold. Ann stares first at Patric, then looks to the woman behind the men; Bertha. Then to Edward with a look of horror. Edward ignores Ann and turns his attention to his accusers.
Edward:
No she-
Patric:
You say that now. Bertha, tell him. Tell them both.
Bertha walks to Edward with a devious smile.
Bertha:
I'm pregnant. And yah...your the father.
There's another silence that's deafening. For a minute which seems like hours, there is shock spread thru the diner.
Edward:
What?
We now notice Bertha's stomach. Indeed we can see the bump that is her stomach. She does indeed look pregnant.
Bertha
I'm pregnant. I told you I was. Your the daddy. And, your mine now.
She gives Ann a mean look. Ann turns away and breaths heavily. She grabs her bag and walks away. She takes the back entrance to get out. She doesn't know she's being followed till she barely get's out.
Edward:
Ann! Wait. Please. I can explain.
Ann stops at hearing his voice. She doesn't turn to look at him. She stares straight forward, yet knows he's behind her.
Ann:
Then explain.
Edward:
A whiles back I went to this parties. I got stupid and drunk. I didn't know what I was doing. I'm sorry. She didn't tell me to just recently. Today at school in fact.
Ann remains silent. The sky however doesn't. Dark omniscient clouds are coming together. You can hear the thunder a little way's off. Ann turns her attention to the sky. Edward looks anxious. As he's about to say something, Ann starts to sway and nearly faints to the floor before Edward catches her.
Edward:
Ann. Ann...look at me, please.
Ann complies without a word. Edward holds her tightly as he tries again to redeem himself.
Edward:
Ann. Anette. Please. It was a mistake-
Ann pulls out of Edward's grasp just as it starts to rain.
Ann:
You have to stay with her. Stay with Bertha. This is good bye Edward.
Edward:
NO! No. This doesn't change anything. This doesn't change how I-how we feel about each other. Things don't have to change.
Ann:
Yes they do. I can't stay with you. Now, take me home.
Edward then takes her home. As Ann is about to step out of Edward's car, Edward calls her to stay a moment.
Edward:
Please. I need to know. Will you, do you still love me as I love you?
Ann:
Yes. I still do love you. But that doesn't change anything. Good-bye Edward.
Ann hugs him quickly and gives him a kiss on the check. She gets out and walks to her front door without looking back. Finally we hear the car drive away.
Ann:
I know what I have to do now.
Exit Scene.
Enter Ann in her room.
The time is twelve midnight. And Ann is surrounded by an empty room. Two bags; one with clothes, the other meager processions.
Ann:
School's almost over. I can finish school with grandma in Arizona. I can't let things keep going as they are.
Exit scene with Ann carrying her bags and getting in a taxi to leave for Arizona.
