Distant Eyes
A child muted by a terrible act of violence

Distant Eyes

There's sadness in her silent gaze,
her fears are hiding there.
I wonder what she saw him do
that makes her sit and stare?

She starts to scream but there's no sound,
her face turns ashen gray.
There's something in those deep blue eyes
that seems so far away.

The howling wind was in the north,
the night her silence fell.
It breaks my heart to see her now,
trapped in an empty shell.

Brutal was the crime of passion,
a scene in crimson red.
A little girl stands all alone,
her Mother slain in bed.

The softness of a gentle heart
turns hard in cruelty's wake;
closing through eternity
for love and Heaven's sake.

So when I see her loneliness
beneath these darker skies,
I know her love will hide behind,
those lost and distant eyes.
