You Can't Hold the Wind
You can’t expect me to be here forever. Nothing personal, really.

Uh oh.
Not again.
I’ve got that rushing,
That tingling sensation,
Running from my head to my toes.

My old friends, the butterflies,
Have returned with a vengeance,
Threatening to explode out of my chest
With every glance he tosses my way.

My thoughts stray from my boyfriend
When he pulls me close,
Trying to keep me there with him.
Doesn’t he know it’s impossible to hold the wind?

It will always whistle right through.

Try as I might to stay in one place,
To drop anchor and stay with one,
Just one person,
I always end up blustering right back out,
Dragging innocent bystanders
Into my whirlwind of emotion.

Wish I could find a way to stay,
Wish there was a good way to say
You can’t expect me to be here forever.

Nothing personal, really.
I like you.
You make me smile.
You make me feel worthwhile.

But smiles just aren’t enough to keep me here.
You can’t hold me forever,
Even if I’d like you to.
We all know it’s impossible to hold the wind.
