"Serengeti Plain"
The lion rules in his domain, And watches wild birds as they fly Across the Serengeti Plain. His urge to chase, he must refrain. His hunter needs, he must deny. The lion rules in his domain. This beauty is hard to explain. The endless veldt, the burning sky Across the Serengeti Plain. He hunts, then eats what he has slain, As zebras stay and graze nearby. The lion rules in his domain. As they are watched with great disdain, Hyenas give a barking cry Across the Serengeti Plain. Perhaps this landscape seems mundane, This place where creatures live and die. The lion rules in his domain Across the Serengeti Plain. ![]() A "Villanelle" is a nineteen-line poem consisting of a very specific rhyming scheme: A1/b/A2 a/b/A1 a/b/A2 a/b/A1 a/b/A2 a/b/A1/A2. The first and the third lines in the first stanza are repeated in alternating order throughout the poem, and appear together in the last couplet (last two lines).
