FOOL'S GOLD

An old man awoke from his afternoon nap
to find the grandchildren sitting close by,
waiting to hear another story of the days
when he panned for gold under the sky.

With a bit of a twinkle in his blue eyes
and after a mighty big yawn, he took a sip
of lemonade and looked at the young faces,
so eager and excited to hear his wit.

He started the story of life by the river
where sunsets were of yellow and red,
a young prospector looking for gold
and failing was thought of with dread.

In the murky brown water he spied
a few pebbles that glittered in the sun,
Excitement grew as he scooped up the pan
and gave a whoop of joy, he had won!

Gathering his pack and heading to town,
to cash in on his dreams of great riches;
His heart sank when they had a good look,
bending over with laughter, as if in stitches.

"It's fool's gold!" they had exclaimed,
"It's not worth even a dime for your time..."
Out into the rain and the wind he went,
feeling chilly and gave up the mine.

He gave away his pan and pack that day,
headed homeward, feeling lost and alone.
There he met a lady who made fine jewelry,
impressed with the man and his stone.

Matching wedding bands on their fingers,
still worn even though they'd grown old;
smiling though years of joy and tears,
precious rings made of his Fool's gold.
