The Storm
A poem about a thunderstorm

The Storm

The heat of midday sun pours down
from an azure summer sky,
Birds singing softly, lost in trees
And a gentle breeze sighs by.

The hedonistic cat sprawls out,
turns tummy to the sun.
Bees are humming quietly,
for their work they must get done.

Suddenly a hush spreads out
across this languid scene.
A coolness comes, a tiny shiver,
the cat wakes from her dream.

There’s a sense of apprehension
creeping through the air.
Birds fall silent, bees have gone,
clouds hide the sun so fair.

Dark clouds they mass across the blue,
static’s all around.
The land gives up an earthy scent
as raindrops hit the ground.

A lurid sky, a giant bruise,
now dominates, not sun.
Rain falls faster, large and bright,
the cat decides to run.

Then suddenly a mighty flash
illuminates the gloom.
The very air then holds its breath,
‘til thunder starts to boom.

Soon all is filled with fury
as the power is set free.
Lightening arcs and thunder crackles,
nature’s on a spree.

Blue white streaks now rent the sky,
heavens’ fury spills.
There’s the smell of iron in the air,
and anticipation thrills.

The storm draws closer, closer still,
the lightening now is constant.
All is lit by eerie light,
nature is triumphant!

Slowly, slowly, passing over,
the tempest goes its way.
Just lightenings’ echoes, distant rumbling
As twilight turns to day.

Rain it ceases, sun returns,
the earth begins to steam.
Diamonds glint on every leaf
as raindrops catch suns’ beam

The cat peeks out from hiding place,
wanders to the door.
Sniffs the air, then finds a spot,
and sprawls, to dream, once more.
