In the poetry newsletter, Larry Powers, aka Kansaspoet, wrote about avoiding cliches and listed the following examples.
~~ mirror of my mind ~~ soaring spirit ~~ purple twilight ~~ drenched by light ~~ twinkling stars ~~ radiant glow ~~ bitter end ~~ eternal sleep ~~ on golden wings ~~ heavenly sphere ~~ shimmering water ~~ shadow of death ~~ endless horizons. I understand why we should avoid using cliches, but something about this list moved me to write this poem, using every one. Sorry, Larry, I couldn't resist. I'm Not Afraid In the mirror of my mind I see myself , a soaring spirit, Drenched by light, The radiant glow from a heavenly sphere. I'm accompanied by angels on golden wings. The shimmering water below reflects my flight. As I move into the purple twilight. Twinkling stars come out to greet me In the darkening sky, as slowly I drift Toward the endless horizons. I feel great peace and do not fear The ever approaching shadow of death. It will not be a bitter end for me, Just a sweet eternal sleep.
