THE FAMILY OF PEW.

A peewee family lives in a tree
Which grows in the yard belonging to me.
They've been there for years and now are quite tame
And they've taught me well how to play their game.

Each morning I wake and open my door,
I sprinkle breadcrumbs on the kitchen floor.
In swoops Mr. Pew, the head of the clan,
And gathers the crumbs as fast as he can.

Next comes Mother; Mrs. Pew is her name,
She hops up the stairs and does just the same.
Together they fly, back up to their nest
And feed the breadcrumbs to all of the rest.

I sit on the stair and stay very calm
Holding morsels of food here in my palm.
I whistle as I would call to a pup,
And one of these birds is sure to fly up.

The food is pecked gently out of my hand.
The trust the birds have is something quite grand.
When the chicks can fly, the parents will lead
Them down from the tree, to meet me and feed.

Today I opened the door, as I do,
The sight I beheld, was havoc, it's true.
A hawk was there swooping into the thick
Of the tree; I ran and picked up a stick.

Pyjama clad Meg was waving her lance,
Brave Mr. Pew took that moment to chance
An aerial dive upon hungry hawk,
Scared him away with a piercing squawk.

A good team we make, my peewees and I
When we are protecting chicks who can't fly.
Hawk will think twice when he next has a thirst
For chicks. And next time, I think I'll dress first!
