She Lingered Still
Shakespearean Sonnet Written for contest. Title is prompt.

She lingered still within her sullen soul,
Her husband hoping she would long to stay.
Yet for her heart fine friends kept up patrol
To keep her from becoming lifelong prey.

Emotional abuse he doled with skill,
And though she fought for pride she could not cut
The heartstrings as each stroke gave her a thrill.
The back and forth created quite a rut.

Divorce stayed on the hazy horizon.
They passed the buoy every other week.
It seemed that their love was sure to wizen,
Yet, history, would always make it pique.

Her friends all know she is so very strong.
She just cannot repel his siren song.
