MAKE THE PAIN GO AWAY

Little Johnny had just turned three
when he fell and scraped his knee.
He got up, crying out to me,
"Mommy, make the pain go away!"

I washed the little scrape with care,
a first-aid cream applied right there.
A band-aid, then a smile we'd share.
It always helps the pain go away.

Johnny turned six and started school,
dressed in new clothes, looking cool,
he was growing up, and as a rule
he hardly ever felt any pain.

First love at sixteen, "she's the one!"
but when all was said and done
it was puppy love, and the setting sun
found Johnny crying, "oh, Mom!"

He worked hard and bought a car,
drove too fast and drove too far,
but that's the way some boys are.
Wings and rings come and go.

Graduation day came all too soon,
boy and girl in love under a full moon,
with plans to marry one day in June.
but the war got in their way.

Our son Johnny in a soldier suit,
his girl thought he was really cute
but I wish he'd taken another route.
I began to feel the pain as he left.

Letters from Johnny said he was fine,
Army life was sure keeping him in line.
Then he was killed by a roadside mine.
MAKE THE PAIN GO AWAY!

Flag-draped coffin, Johnny laid to rest
in a place on the hillside he loved best.
In time the tears may fulfill the quest
and make the pain go away...

But as every mother of a soldier knows,
as she places on a son's grave, a rose,
the pain of living and dying always flows.
Only God can make the pain go away.
