                                            Ghazal 23


Persian:  Banal bulbul agar baa manat sar e yaariest
              Keh ma do aashiq e zaaraem, kaar e ma zaariest
Urdu:      Ker aek shoer too bulbul jo ham say hay yaari
              Keh ham haen aashiq e zaar, apna kaam hay zaari

English:=== O singing bird, you're my kind of guy
                  We are lovers both, and we can only cry
                                                  -

Persian:  Dar an chaman keh naseemay wazad zay turra e dost
              Che ja e dam zadan e naafaha e Tataariest
Urdu:      Naseem e zulf agar gulsitan ko mehka day
              Toe kya majal rakhaen naafaha e Tataari

English:=== Wherever the air does her tresses kiss
                  There is no need for the ambergris
                                                -

Persian:  Biyaar baada keh rangeen kunaem Jama e dilq
              Keh mast e jam e ghorooraem, naam hushiariest
Urdu:      Sharaab la keh karaen surkh apna jama e dilq
              Keh nashsha apna takkabur hay, naam hushiari

English:=== Come, fill the cup, and let me get drunk
                  My arrogance and pride has made me a skunk
                                                  -

Persian:  Na bastaand dar e tohba, halia barkhaiz
              Keh tohba waqt e gul az aashiqi zay baekaariest
Urdu:      Naheen hay tohba ka dar band, aashiq e khursand
              Bhari bahaar maen tohba naheen hay hashiari

English:=== So let us drink, and not be so dense
                  The spring is no time for penitence
                                                    -

Persian:  Saher karishma e waslash ba khaab medidam
              Zahay maratib e khaabay keh beh zay baedariest
Urdu:      Karishma wasl ka ger khaab maen nazar aaay
              Khulay na aankh kabhee, ho kabhee na badaari

English:=== You can meet your love, though it'll be fake
                  Dreaming is better than being awake
                                                        -

Persian:  Khayal e zulf e to pukhtan na kaar e khamanast
              Keh zaer e silsila raftan tareeq e ayyaariest
Urdu:      Na khamkaaroun kay bus ki hay bandish e kakul
              Hay daam e zulf maen aana tareeq e ayyaari

English:=== The snare of her hair is not for the straight
                  Only a devious lover does bite the bait
                                                            -

Persian:  Latitaiest nihani keh ishq az o khaizad
              Keh naam e an na lab e lal o khat e zingaariest
Urdu:      Latifa aur hay, hota hay jis say paeda ishq
              Na naam lal e lab is ka, na khat e zingaari

English:=== There's more to love than passion and sighs
                  The beauty is more than the charming eyes
                                                        -

Persian:  Jamal e shakhs na chashm ast o zulf o aariz o khaal
              Hazar nukta dar in kaar o baar e dildaariest
Urdu:        Yeh sirf zulf ki, aariz ki, lab ki baat naheen
                Chalay hazay tarheh kaar o baar e dildaari

English:=== It isn't just lips that we lovers admire
                  There are many more things that ignite desire
                                                      -

Persian:  Ba aastan e to  mushkil tawan raseed, aaray
              Urooj bar falak e sarwari ba dushwaariest
Urdu:      Lagana ser taeray der per her ik ka kaam naheen
              Keh milti sarwari ser ko hay yeh ba dushwaari

English:=== To be her slave is no ordinary thing
                  I'd rather be her vassal than be a king
                                                      -

Persian:  Rawindagan e tareeqat ba neemjoe nakhrand
              Qaba e atlas e an kas keh az hunar aariest
Urdu:      Qaba e atlas e zarreen e baehunar ki koie
              Karay na mard e tareeqat kabhee khareedaari

English:=== Money sans talent is nothing to admire
                  No mystic would want a kingly attire
                                                        -

Persian:  Dilash ba nala meaazar o khatm kun HAFIZ
              Keh rustgaari e javaed dar kamaazaariest
Urdu:      Fughan say ker na too aazurda dil ko aey HAFIZ
              Hay rustgaari e dayam daroon kamaazari

English:=== It hurts us, HAFIZ, whenever you cry
                  And hurting others one should not try
