DREAM OF ME

Mail Call brought your letter and I held it close to my heart
before opening it and seeing the lavender stationery inside.
Five thousand miles from home, I treasure each line you write.
I shift the weight of the rifle, thinking solely of my new bride.

Today even the dust and sand cannot break the magic spell
of reading about all the folks back home, I miss them so.
Your love radiates through time and space, your embrace
is felt across the miles, and creates a welcome after-glow.

Your face smiles back at me from the picture that you sent.
Loving words mean so much to me, makes a day worth living.
You sign off with All my love, forever and ever and then I see
In bright red letters, "Dream of me, all of my love I'm giving!"

I fold the letter and place it in the pocket near my heart,
wipe away a tear that rolls down across my sunburned face.
Maybe tonight I'll have the chance to write to you again
and tell you that no one else could ever take your place.

The bullets whine and there is not much time to write to you,
but I do get out a few short lines, our mail here is always free.
"Another day in the dust and sand, I miss you so very much.
Until I'm back home in your arms, remember to dream of me"
