First Impressions

I remember the day momma and daddy brought you home. Daddy picked me up from preschool early. " Momma's back from the hospital." He said smiling big. I smiled big too and my stomach fluttered with butterflies. They flapped their wings inside my tummy all the way home. When we got to the house I didn't want to get out of the car. " You ok, Sport?" Daddy asked and I shook my head. " Got a bad case of the butterflies, huh?" He laughed. He picked me up in his strong arms and took me into the house. Momma was sitting in the big comfy rocking chair. The one we'd sit in on early mornings and watch Sesame Street. The one where we'd share milk and cookies. The one she'd rock me to sleep in. Me and momma's chair. I quickly wondered if it would become yours and mommas now.

I looked from momma's pretty smiling face to you. You were in her arms, wrapped in a fluffy pink blanket and for a moment I thought you weren't real because you weren't moving. She smiled. " You wanna hold your little sister, Luc?" I held my breath. You looked so small. Your fair skin was so pale I could see your veins. You were like a china doll, fragile and easy to break. I was so scared of breaking you. I shook my head, but she was getting up so I could sit down. She held you out to me and gentle placed you in my arms. The sudden change made you squirm and you opened your eyes. They were blue like momma's, but most of all they were blue like mine. You blinked up at me and I smiled, gently stroking your smooth cheek. You were soft and you smelled really good. Like baby powder and milk. Your short curls were soft too and gold like the sun. You kept staring at me and all I could do was stare back. " Hi." I final said and my voice cracked.
" Her name is Eve." Daddy said.
Eve. I wondered if it was the same Eve from the Bible. And If so, who did that make me?

" Hi Eve. I'm Luc. I'm your big brother." You stared at me for a quick moment, and then you smiled and grabbed my finger. You squeezed and I knew you knew who I was. I looked up at momma. She was sitting in daddy's lap on the couch. They both smiled. " So are you happy?" Momma asked.
" Huh?" I didn't look up. I couldn't. You wouldn't let me.
" Daddy told me you wanted a little brother."
" Yeah." It was true. But thinking about momma sitting with a new baby boy in our chair made me upset. But I didn't mind now. Now that I knew that it's going to be you. You. No one else.
" Well, how do you feel now?"
" Don't know." I really didn't. You were something new to me. A girl, not like me and daddy. But something warm and loving like momma. You would grow up to smell good, and smile sweetly. You'd be nice to boys and look at them with those big clear eyes of yours. But for now, those eyes were only on me.
