De-Hired

It seems I’m no longer needed now
My skills are not required.
My thirty years of work and toil
Unceremoniously de-hired
Though the lad from personnel was nice
Before he had me fired

Your work is being absorbed he said
Your job is now deficient
The company is being downsized he said
And becoming more efficient
Your severance pay is good he said…..
But it’s nowhere near sufficient

They’ll help me find another job
I shouldn’t have to wait
They’ll identify my skills for me
And keep me up to date
But we all know it’s hopeless
At sixty years, it’s just too late

How can I break this awful news
To my darling bride
And tell my kids their dad is done
Sad, and dead inside.
Not wanted, useless, de- humanized,
And stripped of all his pride.
