Arranging flowers

        there’s a subtle grace in the way
        she arranges the flowers;
        stalks and leaves
        into the vase.
        the way she pours water in it
        and the way she holds them up
        just above the newspaper.
        it was not she who held the vase
                  or the flowers, but they—
        to seem to show me
        what real beauty is.
