THE PARTING

I have been here before. I know these people. I'm not afraid necause the One I Love is here; he won’t let me be harmed. I feel the pain in my belly. I know why I am shivering. This table is cold. The One I Love lifts me and that feels better. I am safe as long as he is here.

He is crying. I have seen him cry before, when the Old One went away and did not come back. I feel his tears on my neck as he holds me. The One I Love knows what to do. I am safe with him here.

The man is back. He is hiding something in his hand. I know what it is. I have seen things like that before. They hurt, but only for a moment. The One I Love would not let anyone do anything bad to me so I wait patiently for the sharp pinch. There. It is over.

Everything is drifting away. I rest my head on the shoulder of the One I Love. My pain has stopped. I am falling asleep. But the One I Love is holding me so I know I am safe to go to sleep now.

Adam laid the sleeping dog on the examination table and took a tissue from the box. “Is it over?”

The vet touched the dog’s neck with his finger and nodded. "You did the right thing. The tumor was getting larger She would soon be in a lot of pain,"

Adam bent and kissed the top of the dog’s head. “Good bye,Old Girl.” he said. “I’m sorry.”
