Cameron watched his beloved Natalie as she slept. It would be easy to pack his bags, scribble something romantic, kiss her forehead one last time and hit the road. He knew he could leave, but he just couldn’t go. They’d agreed things were over and he didn’t owe her anything. But he wanted one last good day to remember her by.
He made her breakfast in bed and woke her with a kiss. Brushing her red hair away from her forehead, he whispered, “Savor this.” She moaned over every bite of the omelet, knowing she’d never taste his cooking again. Now that the worst was over, the arguing and the tears a day behind them, they were free to enjoy each other again. After breakfast, they played miniature golf. It was so good to hear her laugh again. Natalie kissed the scorecard and gave it to him. For lunch, they had a picnic in the park. Every look, every touch, contained such passionate hunger. This was their last day to be in love. Natalie insisted they return to the skating rink where they’d met. He took her to their favorite restaurant for dinner. They ate in blissful silence, their eyes saying everything to each other, all the words that couldn’t be spoken.
Cameron dropped Natalie off at her house for the last time before starting the long drive home. He walked her to the door like he had on their first date. She asked him for one last kiss. He gave her a kiss that said, “I love you,” “I’m sorry,” and “Goodbye” all at once. She held his hand and stared into his eyes for a long time. She said, “Goodbye, my love” as she let go. He smiled as he drove away, grateful for one last good day.
