CLARENCE’S REVENGE I admit it now, We kids were not very nice to Clarence. He was only five and wanted to follow us bigger kids around. Just to please us he would do things we told him to, like eat things. He ate a Japanese beetle grub. He ate a potato bug. That kind of thing. He just wanted to fit in and we took advantage of him. We knew better and we deserved what we got. That summer we discovered that the maple seed pods each contained a round green seed that looked like a fresh pea. Getting Clarence to eat those was easy. But I guess they disagreed with him and he told his mother what we had been up to all summer. His father told my father and we found out our joke was not funny. Dad told us that Clarence was very sick and because he had eaten tree seeds, he now needed to get an operation to remove the trees. Otherwise by next summer he would be covered with leaves. Dad said that since we were the culprits who induced him to eat the seeds, we would have to pay for the operation which would cost a hundred dollars. Dad then put up a list of chores and their money value so we could earn the hundred. For the rest of the summer we worked our tail feathers off cleaning the garage and attic, washing windows, cutting grass, anything on the list. No time for fishing or swimming, just work, work, work. Just before school started Dad told us we had earned enough. Then he said, “How does if feel to be fooled by someone older and smarter? Did you learn anything?” 286 words Written for:
