Jasmine sat in the carriage looking up at the enormous castle. The walls were a dark gray, just like the sky during a violent summer storm. She sighed, her breath a cloud of white in the cold January air. This would now be her home. She shivered from the thought, wishing she were somewhere else.

“It’s time, my lady,” her cousin Jordin said.

“I know.” Jasmine opened the door and grabbed the black shirt of her gown. There was no turning back. Curse her father for using her as a wager in the first place.

She was now married to a stranger, and forced to deal with the consequences of her father’s drunken actions. Last night she tried to run away, but the guards caught her and brought her back. She was locked in her chambers for the night, and finally decided that she’d do what was expected.

Jordin took her arm and led her to the door. Every step they took, her heart pounded in trepidation. Even her blood rushed through her like a wild river. How could she get out of this? Was there even a way? Well, she could make the King hate her. That was certainly a good idea, and the more she thought about it, the more appealing it became.

A smile enveloped her face as they reached the wooden door with its gleaming gold knocker. Jasmine drew in a deep breath, ready to carry out her plan. She could do this, and with any luck, be back home before the month was out.

Jordin knocked as they waited. Slowly the big door began to open, creaking loudly sending shivers down her spine.

There he stood, in all his glory. Jasmine couldn’t believe her eyes. Was she really seeing whom she thought she saw? “Aladdin!”
