WHAT IS POETRY?—a sonnet
When thoughts are too deep for telling in prose, When sentences and phrases can’t suffice; When hearts are frozen though they may be close, When words alone are too cold to break ice; When feeling is shadowed by the meaning, When logic overrides the expression; When one wants to describe what one’s dreaming But rules of language mar one’s intention; It’s then that poetry fulfills the need And as tears drip from a heart that’s broken, Couplets, stanzas and sonnets do they feed And a poem by itself gets written. Wounds of the heart does true poetry nurse, What can’t be healed by balm is healed by verse. • Initially written for the book "MISCELLANEA" • Related poems: THE SECRET OF MY POEMS--"THE SECRET OF MY POEMS--Editor's choice" POETRY: an addiction—"POETRY: an addiction" M C Gupta 13 February, 2005
