When thoughts are too deep for telling in prose,
When sentences and phrases can’t suffice;
When hearts are frozen though they may be close,
When words alone are too cold to break ice;
When feeling is shadowed by the meaning,
When logic overrides the expression;
When one wants to describe what one’s dreaming
But rules of language mar one’s intention;
It’s then that poetry fulfills the need
And as tears drip from a heart that’s broken,
Couplets, stanzas and sonnets do they feed
And a poem by itself gets written.
Wounds of the heart does true poetry nurse,
What can’t be healed by balm is healed by verse.
