Gray’s Wish

Once upon a time in a field of rocks and stones there lived a stone name Gray. Gray didn’t sparkle or have the bright colors like some of the other rocks or stones in the field. He was just a pale gray stone. But, if you took the time and looked very close, you could see that Mother Nature had given him something special. She had given him, in a slightly darker gray, a face. Gray had two tiny eyes, a speck for a nose, and a very thin half-moon shaped line for a mouth.

Now, every day, children would come to that field looking for that special rock or stone to add to their collections. Everyday, Gray laid there patiently waiting and hoping that someone would see him and he would be chosen. It didn’t happen. No one seemed to want a pale gray stone. They wanted the sparkling ones or the bright colored ones. They didn’t even pick him up and look at him. This made Gray very sad for more than anything he hoped each day that someone would think that he was special enough to want him.

One day, two little girls came to the field and Gray laid there and listened to them as he hoped that one would notice him. They didn’t pick him, but what he heard one of them say filled him with hope. One of them had told the other that she had wished upon a star and that star had granted her wish. It couldn’t be just any star. It had to be the first star that you saw each night.

Gray could hardly wait for the day to end. He knew just what he was going to do. He was going to make a wish and maybe the star would grant his wish.

Finally, the sun went down. Gray looked at darkening sky and saw it – the first star of the night, sparkling like a diamond. Gray didn’t know what words to say or quite how he should say them so he decided to say what he felt in his heart.

“Star shining so bright. Please grant my wish...don’t you know someone who would want me?”

Well, the star was touched by Gray’s wish for he knew someone else was making a wish at that very same time. At that very moment, a little boy was wishing that he could find that very special stone for his collection. So, the star decided he would grant Gray’s wish (and the little boy’s wish).

The next morning, among the children that came to the field was a little boy with his older brother. The older brother kept trying to get the little boy to choose one of the sparkling stones or one of brightly colored stones, but the little boy just kept shaking his head “no.” Gray held his breath as he watched the two coming closer. The little boy saw Gray. He bent down and picked up Gray. It was the first time that Gray had ever been picked up and he liked it. Hope filled Gray’s heart. The little boy looked at Gray very carefully. Yes, there it is ... a face ... a smiling face. And it knows! Then the little boy smiled and Gray smiled. Both knew, they were meant for each other.

The little boy looked at his brother and showed him Gray. “I found it. The perfect stone and look it even has a face ... a smiley face. My wish came true.”

Gray's smile brightened for his wish had come true, too.
