HAPPY NEW YEAR, THROW ME A PENNY
Happy New Year I wish you all, Enjoy and make merry. Hold arm in arm and drink and dance, Let there be no worry. But while you ride high in the sky, Spare a thought for the scum Of earth, clad in their stinking rags, Who dare not, near you, come. But even from a distance you Can glance at me and tell That a penny thrown by you might Buy me my next morsel. I’m weak in body and spirit, Bit by hunger and cold. Even to make my begging round, I am rather too old. Yet I harbor a hope in my This weather- beaten chest: That I would have mercy of those Who are clad in their best. • Written in abcb, 8-6-8-6 format * Initially written as entry 397502 in the book "MISCELLANEA" M C Gupta 7 January 2006
