Capturing Christmas
I vowed that this would be the year that I would capture Christmas cheer. For last year, like seasons before, its magic never found my door. I set the traps — it wasn't hard. I started with the Christmas cards. Then hung our stockings and the wreath plus mistletoe to stand beneath. While whistling Christmas songs with glee I trimmed a glorious fir tree. Ten baubles dangling on each bough, like lures — I'll catch that magic now. With time between the kids and job, I braved the malls — battled the mobs. I boldly fought for parking spots, then shopped the sales and spent a lot. I wrapped the gifts and strung up lights, still Christmas spirit wouldn't bite! There must be something I forgot. Expert advice, I promptly sought. "Oh Grandma, can you tell me why? Why does the magic pass me by?" She listened, as I cried and whined, with knowing smile and eyes so kind. She wrapped her arms around me then. I felt just like a child again. "My dear, it's more than store-bought things. Reflect on beauty nature brings. Like finding peace in silent nights or one bright star; Heaven's sweet light. On family, extend much love. Tell the story of God above. Believe in things with all your heart. Have hope — then Christmas joy will start." Soon feelings I'd not felt in years were sprouting from my blur of tears. Now memories and tea we share as home-made goodies spice the air, and like the sparkle of fresh snow, my new-found Christmas spirit glows. 40 lines Iambic tetrameter aabb rhyme scheme
