The Little Servant Candle
Sometimes the least important becomes the most important

It was hard to stand tall and straight
Because he knew his job was not great.
How he wished he could be one of the eight
Who dispelled the dark on Hanukah.

His job was so lowly and unimportant
To him his need was not evident.
Because a simple match could have lent
A flame to the candles on Hanukah.

“Little Shamash how can you speak so?”
Asked the First Night, “Do you not know?”
You are the most important one that glows
On the Hanukiah on Hanukah!

“We are only a decoration
To remind all of the Rededication
Without you there’d be no transformation
Your purpose is to begin Hanukah.”

“Your symbolism is not random
You are all who have fought for freedom
All who have followed the Wisdom
Of the miracle that is Hanukah.”

Little Shamash much taller stood
Because his purpose he now understood
And from this moment he vowed he would
Be the best servant candle for Hanukah.
