Death And A Drowning

Someone's calling from down below
where the darkness is thicker
than the cool brown mud
at the bottom of the river;
all the other children stay far back
from the banks of sadness and death,
taking in the cruel beauty and danger
that lurks tiny footprints away;
still the lure of his whisper is strong
when you are young and innocent,
no one ever wins the fight against his will
or learns all the lessons of life before it's too late
to matter or make a difference,
and so they proceed with no concern for safety
and less for the danger that has befallen their friend
for his disguise is clever and hard to see through
but the consequences are terrible and frightening
and will cause them to tremble in his presence,
the chill that is his breath
can be felt in their very souls
but they will brave the dark waters;
forever swimming and laughing,
as they have always done before.
