FIRE STATION NO. 9

Banners and balloons
decorate the living room,
welcoming Cody’s friends
to his fourth birthday party.

Fireman hats are atop
each happy little head ---
nine girls and boys.

Big brother Tyler was six
just two months ago.
Now it’s Cody’s turn to glow.

Outside we form a line
with Cody leading the way
down the block
to Fire Station No. 9.

Lt. Tom greets,
graciously and patiently
guiding us through his station,
making gear and duties clear
to exuberant children
boarding the engine.

A fireman amazingly
dons full gear in
two-and-a-half minutes flat.

We hasten to the front
amidst loud trills of alarm.
Traffic stops as the big engine
leaves to circle the block.

Our tour complete ---
children reassemble out back,
with thank you’s and good-byes to
Lt. Tom and Fire Station No. 9.
