The Magic Cure

As they arrived at Daniel’s sister’s house, his wife, Cassandra said, “ You’re here to rest. Paul will help me with the bags.”

Daniel went in the house and his niece, Amber hugged him. “Uncle Daniel, I’m so glad you’re coming to my birthday party. We’re going to have it tomorrow night on the beach. And we’re going to have a big bonfire, and roast wieners and marshmallows.”

“Now, young lady, don’t pester your uncle.”

“It’s all right, Sis.” Daniel said and then turned to Amber. “Now tell be all about this party.”

She sat next to him. “All my friends from school are coming. I told them all about you. Please do some magic at my party.”

“Amber,” her mother said. “Uncle Daniel is here to rest.”

“It’s ok, Sis. I want to do it. I’ll do some simple tricks and Amber can be my assistant.” Daniel took a small suitcase from Paul. “I have everything we need in here. Amber, let‘s go downstairs and plan our show.”

Cassandra smiled and said, “Oh let them go, Linda. This is the first time I’ve seen him really happy since his heart attack.”

Daniel and Amber planned and practiced the magic for her party until dinner. Then after dinner until Linda insisted that Amber go to bed. Amber kissed Daniel and said, “You’re the best uncle ever.”

Cassandra touched his arm. “It’s time you were in bed as well.”

The next night in the light of the bonfire Daniel and his niece performed magic to applause of a crowd of fifth graders and their parents.

Linda said, “I’m sorry, Cass. He’s not getting much rest.”

Cassandra smiled. “This is doing more good than you can imagine. He gave up after his heart attack. I packed that bag hoping this would happen. ”
