An unexpected package came today,
Tightly bound with a thick thread of dark grey.
I took it from the weathered old postman,
said “Thanks!” as it shook in my trembling hands.
He waved goodbye to me and then drove off.
I went inside, and my warm coat did doff
Before I tore open the envelope
that was now the focus of my mind’s scope.
I read the note, a letter from my friend
For whose love I never had to contend.
The box contained three special gifts for me: Peppermints, a rose, and shells from the sea.
“I couldn’t see you on Christmas,” he wrote,
“I canceled our dinner on the riverboat,
And I couldn’t go to the beach this year,
But I hope these presents will bring you cheer.”
I cried for my soldier, my fiancée,
Abroad doing his duty each long day.
My heart has been in pieces since he left,
Of his strong presence I have been bereft.
Too many days he has been gone from me,
Each moment without him is agony,
And as I eat a crimson-white candy,
I miss him so much, my love, my Andy.
