WAITING UPON ONE WHO IS LEAVING: a sonnet
To one who is waiting upon his wife, As she awaits her that final moment, When she would be free from the woe and strife Of this life and quit her worldly raiment, What word of solace can a friend offer? What sane advice a mere mortal can give? He can only his hand gently proffer And hope in His grace she may ever live. At such a time it is so hard to think Of something to say to the one grieving. Silent thoughts for the one about to sink Reach without fail the soul that is leaving. Do not think that such prayers are of no use. Even though silent, they are quite diffuse. * Written for Monty M C Gupta 24 January 2008
