Midnight Escape

Frost glistens on the ground,
and stars flicker faintly against the midnight sky.
I tiptoe
out of bed, slip on
my battered sneakers
and a small jacket.
But no gloves or hat.
You see, that's half the fun!

I turn the nob with caution
so as not to wake anyone
and start on my way down
the icy cold alley way.
I gaze upward
at the brilliant full moon and sigh.
After a while, I feel my fingers
and ears numbing up,
but don't turn around
for I can't keep my eyes off
the man in the moon.

I reach the playground,
and sit on a frosty swing.
My knuckles turn white as I grip
the metal chain
Gazing up at the sky again,
I notice the silver moon fading
and the sun quickly replacing it.

I take my time back up the alley way,
for it is only 4:00 am.
I sneak back into the silent house
and into my dark and empty bedroom.

I am impatient for tomorrow night
when I walk the icey cold alley way...
