The City
Wrapped in translucent layers of spackle and sparkle
A rotting city in a wavering empire
Derelicts on street corners looking for a dime
Snarling young emos, all they do is whine
White punks, gimme a fix on their chest
Preppy young businessmen looking their best
Ghetto black boyz in gang wars
Beggars in the city of the poor
Skyscrapers dwarf the water tower
Lights and machines hold the power
New York, New York, the wasteland, the girth
The greatest city on earth
Come see the neon signs
Illuminating garbage and fruit rinds
The walking dead live and perish like robots
Live, die, live, die, obey
They take to the streets demanding dental plans
So they can go buy more for their mistresses
New York, New York, the wasteland, the girth
The greatest city on earth
Come see the neon signs
Illuminating garbage and fruit rinds
Go one layer deeper, there is beauty underneath
A sun above the polluted sky
In love lovely couples kissing in the dark
Autonomous androids dreaming to fly
Fu for a computer
Dull shiny silver and space age blue
My connection out, my escape
Endless hours in a false world
Ah, and I speak with such contempt
But I'm here too, I'm not outside
Trapped in the 21st century
I can't enjoy the green grass or the blue sky without my companion
Looking at this computer
I fear for my generation
No disconnect, 24/7 information age
I look for the line between reality and pixels
Is the material world simply hi-def?
I look for meaning at 11:30 on a screen
I look for meaning on Facebook and IM
I look for meaning at google and digg
I look for meaning when I stare out into the sky and ask why
And go back to my 21st century love
