The Reason I Walk
A Spenserian sonnet about my ex-fiancee.

My steps on the asphalt were confident

My life seemed happy, wherever I gazed

I pondered a while what all of this meant

It was my fiancee that had me dazed

My calm, supportive Laura, never fazed

She’s always here, hazel eyes of fire

How she makes me grin still leaves me amazed

She cooks, proofreads, and raises me higher

She’s both muse and music to my choir

Her laugh is a lullaby, loving, light

She’s a gift from heaven, all I desire

Yet heaven looks down, my angel in sight

And envies me my key to her heart’s lock

I hold it dear, it’s the reason I walk
